While the tablet is still an important device, it has lost its luster in recent years. Prices for laptops on Black Friday and Cyber Monday are expected to be lower than ever in 2017, and smartphones have advanced to the point where they can complete the majority of tasks that tablets can. This puts tablets in somewhat of an awkward category, but there is still a pretty high demand for them during the holiday shopping season.

We will start with price predictions for Apple's line of iPads. Apple has simplified the lineup since last year, and it is going to be cheaper than ever to get a fairly high-storage model.

Apple iPad 2017 Model Black Friday Predictions

Black Friday Cyber Monday iPad Predictions 2017

iPad Pro 12.9″:

Originally released in 2015, the iPad Pro 12.9″ is entering its third season, and things have changed since last year. In 2016, the base model (Wi-Fi only) was the 32 GB edition, and the best deal was for $689.99, which was a discount of $110. Recently, Apple upgraded the base 12.9″ model from 32 GB to 64 GB, and the retail price of $799 did not change. For 2017, expect to be able to get a 64 GB model with Wi-Fi only for $674, which is a discount of $125. If stores still have any old 32 GB models in stock, expect to be able to get one for only $549.

iPad Pro 10.5″:

New for 2017, Apple replaced the iPad Pro 9.7″ version with a larger 10.5″ version. The basic discount for the 9.7″ version last year was for $125 to $150 off. We think the new 10.5″ version will be on the lower end of that spectrum, so expect prices to start at $524 for the 64 GB model with Wi-Fi only, which is a discount of $125 from the retail price of $649.

iPad (2017):

Earlier this year, Apple replaced the popular iPad Air 2 with a new 9.7-inch device simply entitled iPad. Last year, the basic discount for the iPad Air 2 was $125 off. For 2017, we expect the new 32 GB iPad to be available for $229, which is a discount of $100 off the retail price of $329. For retailers that still have remaining inventory of the iPad Air 2, expect discounts exceeding $200.

iPad Mini 4:

Back again for 2017, the iPad Mini 4 is now only available with 128 GB of storage. It currently retails for $399, which is $100 cheaper than it sold for last year. Expect it to be available for $249 on Black Friday, which is a discount of $150. Best Buy recently sold it for $275 during a July sale, so we think the price will drop even further during Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year.

Gift Card Bundles:

In recent years, the Apple Store bundled select iPads with gift cards without actually offering a discount. In many cases, the gift cards were only provided with older models, which makes the Apple Store a place to avoid when purchasing an iPad on Black Friday. Other retailers, including Best Buy and Target, have included gift cards with discounted iPads in the past. For 2017, expect to see gift cards valued at $20 to $60, with the average being $40.

As usual, Amazon's line of Fire tablets looks a lot different than it did last year. For that reason, we are basing our predictions off Prime Day prices from this past year. Amazon usually has similar prices on Prime Day and on Black Friday, which is why we are pretty confident these will be the prices.

New Fire 7:

New for 2017, Amazon made improvements to the already popular 7-inch Fire tablet. On Prime Day, it was available for $29.99, which was a discount of $20 off the retail price of $49.99. Today, Amazon has a special for the Fire 7 for only $34.99, which is a discount of $15. For Black Friday and Cyber Monday, expect this model to be available for $29.99 the entire weekend.

New Fire HD 8:

Upgraded for 2017, the Fire HD 8 was a big hit during Prime Day. It was available for $49.99, which was a discount of $30 off from the retail price of $79.99. Today, Amazon has a special for the Fire HD 8 for $54.99, which is only a limited-time offer. For Black Friday, expect Amazon to match Prime Day and to sell the Fire HD 8 for only $49.99.

Fire HD 10:

Still available on Amazon's website, the Fire HD 10 is unlikely to be very relevant this year. There were minimal deals on Black Friday last year, and it was absent on Prime Day. Regardless, we think Amazon will offer it for $199.99, which is a modest discount of $30 off. Regardless of the price, we recommend targeting one of the much cheaper and newer models.

New Fire 7 Kids Edition:

New for 2017, the Fire 7 Kids Edition is an affordable tablet that comes with a 2-year worry-free guarantee. On Prime Day, it was available for $69.99, which was a discount of $30 off from the retail price of $99.99. Amazon is currently selling it for the normal price of $99.99, so there are no specials deals in place right now. Regardless, expect it to be available for $69.99 on Black Friday and Cyber Monday for the duration of the weekend.

New Fire HD 8 Kids Edition:

Also new for 2017, the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition offers children a high-quality and larger model than the 7-inch edition. It was available for $89.99 on Prime Day, which was a discount of $40 off from the retail price of $129.99. Expect Amazon to bring back this price in late November. Like the 7-inch edition, the HD 8 Kids Edition also comes with a 2-year worry-free guarantee.

Samsung Tablets and General Predictions

Samsung Galaxy Tablets:

While the Apple iPad and Amazon Fire remain the most popular tablets on Black Friday, Samsung's Galaxy Tab is not far behind. Last year, the cheapest Samsung option was the Samsung Galaxy Tab E Lite Tablet for $67.99 from Shopko, which was a discount of $62 off from the normal price of $129.99. Numerous stores had this same model available for $69.99. For 2017, expect the cheapest Samsung tablet to be available for only $60. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7″ should be on sale for $79.99, which is $10 cheaper than the best price of $89.99 last year.

The average price for a Samsung tablet this year should be around $150. Last year, there were over 20 deals for Samsung tablets priced $67.99 to $200, with most being $100 to $200.

Cheapest Overall Tablet:

Prices for tablets are going down every single year, and it is always fun to see which store will offer the absolute lowest deal. Last year, Shopko sold the Trio 8GB 7″ Tablet for $24.99. This tablet normally sold for $59.99, and it was not exactly a high-quality model. Regardless, you cannot beat that price for a working tablet. In previous years, we actually saw tablets available for under $20.

For 2017, expect the cheapest price to be for $15. As expected, the brand is going to be suspect, and it is not going to offer high performance. Expect the brand to be Trio, RCA, or Emerson.

Average Bundled Gift Card:

As referenced earlier, many tablets are bundled with gift cards on Black Friday. While we usually see more come with iPads, we do expect bundles to exist for Samsung and other brands. Expect card values to start at $10 and go all the way up to $100. On average, you should expect to receive a gift card valued at $40.

Average Overall Tablet Discount:

We have been following tablet prices on Black Friday for years, and the average discount does not change much from one year to the next. For 2017, expect to save around 22.5 percent on a tablet purchase. This figure was calculated by averaging the savings on over 150 tablet deals from last year.

Tablet Black Friday Predictions Conclusion

While the tablet is seemingly on life support, it will survive in 2017 and beyond. For the best overall value, we recommend Amazon's line of Fire tablets, with the new Fire HD 8 being the top choice. Even better, Amazon has great warranties for their kids' tablets, which makes them a smart purchase for children. For performance and reliability, the iPad is really the top bet, but you will have to pay at least $229 for the cheapest iPad. Finally, Samsung always offers a pretty diverse selection, and prices should start at only $60.
